Professional whitening works best for patients with generally healthy teeth and gums who have surface staining from food, drink or tobacco, and who want a brighter appearance without changing the shape or structure of their teeth.
Whitening May Be Limited or Unsuitable When:
- Visible crowns, veneers, bridges and composite fillings are present, because these restorations will not whiten with natural teeth.
- There is active tooth decay, gum disease, cracked teeth or untreated oral pathology.
- The patient has significant existing sensitivity or exposed root surfaces.

What Results Can Teeth Whitening Achieve?
Whitening results vary between patients. The final shade depends on the starting tooth colour, type and depth of discolouration, age, enamel characteristics and the whitening protocol used.
A specific number of shades or a particular final colour should not be guaranteed before treatment. Surface stains associated with tea, coffee, red wine or tobacco may respond differently from intrinsic discolouration caused by developmental factors, trauma or medication.
Crowns, veneers, bridges, implants and composite restorations do not whiten. This can create a shade mismatch if visible restorations are already present.
