Overview
What Dental Implants Involve
A dental implant is a titanium fixture placed surgically into the jawbone to serve as the root for a replacement tooth. Once placed, the implant undergoes osseointegration — the bone gradually fuses with the fixture over weeks to months, creating a stable foundation for the restoration placed on top.
The visible crown is attached to the implant through a connector called an abutment. Unlike a conventional bridge, an implant is anchored independently in the jaw without preparing the adjacent teeth. Implants may replace single missing teeth, multiple teeth or a full arch, depending on the restoration planned.

Implant positioning is planned using the clinical examination and appropriate radiographic imaging. Implant surgery is performed by the appropriately assigned implant clinician following case-specific surgical and restorative planning.

Single-Tooth Implant
One implant supports a crown to replace one missing tooth. Treatment planning must consider the available space, bone, gum position, bite and appearance of the neighbouring teeth.
Multiple Missing Teeth
Several missing teeth may sometimes be replaced by an implant-supported bridge rather than one implant for every missing tooth. The number and position of implants depend on the span, bite forces and available bone.
Full-Arch Implant Treatment
A full arch may be restored using an implant-supported fixed prosthesis where clinically appropriate. The number and position of implants cannot be selected from a package name alone.

Suitability
Tooth Loss and Alternatives
Tooth loss — whether from decay, trauma, gum disease or extraction — can affect both function and appearance. Missing teeth may allow neighbouring teeth to shift, alter the bite and lead to progressive bone loss in the area. Addressing tooth loss is therefore not purely cosmetic.
Dental implants are one option, but they are not suitable for everyone. Available bone, gum health and general medical health are the primary clinical criteria. Other options may be considered depending on the situation.

Clinical Assessment
Bone Condition, Imaging and Grafting
Implant planning requires assessment of the available bone and nearby anatomical structures. Panoramic and intraoral radiographs may provide useful initial information. A CBCT scan provides three-dimensional information and may be required when the clinician needs to assess bone dimensions, the position of nerves or sinuses, grafting requirements or more complex implant sites.
The type and extent of imaging should be selected after clinical evaluation. A preliminary review based on existing records cannot replace the imaging required for final surgical planning.
Bone Grafting
Bone grafting may be considered when the available bone does not provide the dimensions required for the proposed implant position.
Sinus Augmentation
In the posterior upper jaw, reduced bone height beneath the maxillary sinus may lead the clinical team to consider a sinus augmentation procedure.
Important: Neither bone grafting nor sinus augmentation should be presumed from photographs alone. Final need, timing and cost depend on clinical examination and appropriate imaging.

Oral health, gums, bite, bone and implant positions are assessed. The proposed plan may change after examination.

Surgical Phase
Implant placement is performed. Extractions, grafting or sinus augmentation may be carried out where included in the confirmed plan.

Healing and Osseointegration
The implant is allowed to integrate with the surrounding bone. The duration varies according to the site, bone quality, stability and additional procedures.

Restorative Phase
The implant position and integration are reviewed before the abutment and final crown or prosthesis are produced.

Maintenance
Implant-supported restorations require ongoing home care and professional review after treatment.
For many conventional implant cases, the healing phase takes several months and commonly falls within an approximate three-to-six-month range. The actual timing may be shorter or longer depending on the clinical situation. Many UK patients require a surgical visit followed by a second restorative visit after healing; additional visits may be required where grafting, complications or further clinical adjustments are involved.
Immediate or early loading may allow a temporary restoration to be fitted sooner in selected cases. It is not an automatic inclusion and should not be presented as “same-day permanent teeth”.

Smoking and Gum Disease
Smoking, poor plaque control and a history of periodontitis should be disclosed during assessment. These factors do not produce the same outcome in every patient but may increase the risk of implant complications and peri-implant disease.

Aftercare and Long-Term Implant Maintenance
Dental implants and implant-supported restorations require daily cleaning and continuing professional review. They are not maintenance-free replacements for natural teeth.
The patient should understand who will provide routine examinations, professional cleaning, radiographs where indicated, prosthetic maintenance and management of complications after returning to the UK. Regular assessment of the peri-implant tissues, plaque control and risk-based professional maintenance are central to protecting implant health; the maintenance interval should be based on the patient’s risk profile rather than a single fixed schedule.
